Die Geschichte des Schwedenofens

The history of the Swedish stove

There's nothing cosier than sitting inside in front of a warm Swedish stove in winter when it's bitterly cold outside and listening to the steady crackle of the fire. But why is it actually called a Swedish stove and what makes it so special?

The Swedish stove doesn't actually come from Sweden, but rather from America.

There, at the beginning of the 20th century, there were so-called lighted stoves with a glass element through which you could see the fire. This was new, because until then, fireplaces and stoves had always been closed or only had very narrow slits through which you could see the fire for fear of flying sparks. It would take until the middle of the 20th century for glass to be processed in such a way that today's large viewing panels on stoves were possible. Even though Swedish stoves did not originate in Sweden, they are still associated with Scandinavian cosiness and the long, cold winters there. It provides cosy warmth for hours on end and is also a stylish home accessory.
